2024 African Continental Championships: Review

As Henok Mulubrhan was crowned Elite Men’s Africa Champion for the third year in a row today – unprecedented we think – we thought it good to write up an overview of all the results in one place.

Big congratulations to Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio for her fifth Africa Continental Champion title, first since 2015 when she won her fourth Women’s Elite race in a row (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015) – making her Africa’s most ‘winning-est’ elite rider at the Continental Championships.

Firstly, we thought an overall Individual Gold Medal table would be useful to see (table below). It is not too surprising that Africa’s #1 nation Eritrea dominated these championships with 6 gold medals, and 12 medals overall, over a third of all available. They sent a good squad, and they delivered.

Team South Africa, with all of their riders being self-funded, put in a great performance to back up their Africa’s #2 position in the latest UCI tables, with 2 gold and 4 strong silver medals.

With Team Algeria refusing to attend, there was a chance for some of the second-tier nations to secure some surprises, and Team Uganda was that team, with a brilliant five medal haul, including two golds! Will the associated UCI points see a nice jump up the Africa Tour rankings? We were a bit disappointed with Team Morocco, always a strong group of riders but only one bronze medal this year.

Full individual* medal table:

Nation Gold Medals Silver Medals Bronze Medals
Eritrea 6 3 3
South Africa 2 4 1
Uganda 2 2 1
Egypt 1
Ethiopia 2
Morocco 1
Namibia 1
Rwanda 1

*This table does not include the ‘Mixed Relay results as hard to reflect this event in an Individual Medal Table. The results of this event were: #1 Rwanda / #2 Eritrea / #3 Ethiopia
