Throwback Thursday: Janvier has been with Team Rwanda since March 2014!

Janvier works as a guard here at the center helping to keep us safe, but he’s got many other talents as well. Before his time with Team Rwanda he started in 2007 with the German company, Strabag, the company that built this center. After that he worked with Musanze, Inc., from 2009-2013.

Janvier is the 5th born out of six siblings. He has three brothers and two sisters. He started school late due to issues of the genocide. After the genocide Janvier had to stay at home to tend to the land and animals. In 2006 he attended secondary school, at a very late age, and stopped in order to start work. He returned in 2009 to finish his studies.

The most interesting thing about Janvier is that he can speak five languages, that’s right, five. In primary school he was taught to take exams in French and Kinyarwanda. In secondary school he picked up Kiswahili, as it was then taught in the schooling system. During his time working with the Germans he started learning German, and lastly he speaks English, which he learned in school and continued to practice afterwards. He tells me, he wants to finish school and go to university for Tourism but the lack of school fees keeps him from advancing.

But, he has a passion for language, and it’s clear too when you speak to him. He is always asking what English words mean and how to use them. He explains that he likes languages because he enjoys working with people, learning about new cultures, and new places of the world. When I ask him why he enjoys most about working here, he answers, “I appreciate working here at the center because I have the opportunity to meet and interact with people from around the world, I am always learning.”

Thank you Janvier for keeping us safe and for teaching us more about your journey here with Team Rwanda!
